CES 2013: UltraHD

Walking the show floor this year by far the most astounding new technology were the UltraHD displays. Pretty well every manufacturer had them on display. Known as 4K in the movie industry, a whopping resolution of 3840 × 2160 (8.3 megapixels) vs. the current HD 1080p format which is 1920 x 1080 (2.1 megapixels).

The new UltraHD displays were simply incredible! The most surprising aspect was the ability to up-convert 1080p content to 4K res. Sharp showed a demo with 2 displays side by side showing the same 1080p content and the 4K display had so much more detail that there was no comparison.

The other aspect of the new UltraHD sets was how amazing passive 3D looked, due to the higher resolution there were no more scanning lines for close up or any fatigue like the active shutter system.

Also, these new TV’s are going to come in BIG sizes. Samsung showed a 110″, LG 84″, Sharp and Panasonic also showed huge UltraHD displays.

We should start seeing these new displays in the second Quarter of 2013, they will not be cheap. But, I can assure that they will not disappoint.
